While spear fishing off the rocky beach of Kauai, 12 year-old Booton MacAvoy makes a fearful discovery. What he has mistaken for a fish is a man, floating half submerged in the churning sea. The rescued stranger turns out to be Lincoln Costain (James Garner), a shanghaied Texas cowpoke who jumps ship in Hawaii and lands boots-first in island intrigue and adventure! Costain and a Henrietta MacAvoy (Vera Miles) team up to turn a scrubby potato plantation into the island's first cattle spread. First, Costain must outwit the treacherous local witch doctor, turn a bunch of happy-go-lucky islanders into hard-riding cowhands, head off a disastrous midnight stampede, and confront Henrietta's underhanded would-be-suitor (Robert Culp).
